T'rin sat a the mouth of a small cave, leaning against the bulk of his brown dragon. He had a rather dreamy look in his eyes. Naercyth suddenly started, causing his rider to start too.
A noise! The dragon's head went up, sniffing the air. T'rin stood and walked toward the sound. He could hear it too, a sort of clicking and snapping. He rested a hand on the brown's nose, calming it. "Shh, I hear it too."
Walking carefully down the depth of the cave he caught site of a low outcropping in the wall of the cave, almost as riddled with holes as the cliff with caves. As he neared it the clicking and cracking grew louder, then all out stopped.
T'rin stopped too, staring at the outcropping. Warily he reached into one of the holes and felt something down soft. He snatched his hand back, surprised. He hadn't been expecting something soft. There was a soft chitter as he reached back into the hole, retreiving a small soft egg. The chitters were coming from it. Sad noises. Just as he stroked the egg the soft covering split and a small white body rolled onto his hand.
It was only about the length of his middle finger, as soft as its egg had been. A small snake-like thing, a feathery mane around it's neck, hatchling soft spines covered its body. A new hatched Syphir.
With his free hand he reached into another hole and felt something soft again. He gently picked it up. This was not an egg but a black body, from the tip of his fingers, just past his wrist. They both seemed to be... Asleep. Swiftly he strode back to the front of the cave.
He sat the two eggs by Naercyth. "Don't worry, I'll be back. He tugged off his tunic, knotting two sides together to form a simple carrying bag. When he returned to the outcropping he checked all the holes, gentlely placing syphirs into his knotted tunic.
After checking every hole and harvesting the new hatchlings he returned to the cave mouth, counting them. One gold, three blacks, four coppers, six greys and two whites. Counting the first two. Sixteen eggs.
Unsure of whether they needed warmth he left the sleeping hatchlings in his tunic, except the first white and black, which he cradled in his hands. He perched atop Naercyth's foot, watching the hatchlings hopefully.
After quite some time, when the light outside the cave was bright with midday sun the black in his hands shivered. He sat straight having dozed. "Naercyth contact a queen, something! Contact someone! Bring food! Ouch!" The black had decided to taste test his thumb.
Attention! Hatching, hatching of some kind! Bring food. Naercyth contacted.#nosmileys

Post by Neou and Korint on Mar 14, 2004 21:39:07 GMT -5
Finally able to get her whersports, green Kask, brown Dask, and bronze Dual to wake themselves sufficently, Neou trudged farther down the shore of the beach. Somehow she had ended up being burdened with the extra meat, much to her chagrin. At first she had tried tying it to Elenath's back, but the Queen had refused, shying away. "Sharding creature," was all Neou muttered. Shakespeare, disturbed by her anger, made a few distressed creeling noises. "I should be going back to the Weyr, yet I continue here. What is here? Caves, no doubt. Something of that sort." Still continuing onwards, Neou soon heard frenzied shouting that sounded none too good. "Hello! Neou, rider of golden Queen Elenath and owner of too many various whersports to count approaches!" Perhaps someone was in trouble? No, the cries did not sound distressed. Joyous, but only somewhat harried. Worried, perhaps. Ah well, there was always time to see. "What are those?" Seeing the strange creatures, Neou paushed once. Tual, impatient at his Bonded, careully butted her in the legs to keep her moving. Some strange creatures are Hatching Neoumine. They will want your food. Was that it? Grinning, Neou offered the food to the dragonrider for his new charges. *Dinner, brb! Save at least one of those creatures for me!*

Thank the Egg, someone came! T'rin jumped up as Neou came into the cave, grinning like mad. He took the meat with a thankful bob of the head, then, stuffing the ravenous mouth of the black, which was constricting around his wrist, he motioned to his clicking, moving tunic.
"Something's hatched... Were sleeping... Want to Impress?" He looked at the Queen rider and her whersports.
As he spoke some of the Syphirs had freed themselves from the tunic, slithering across the cave floor. A copper, a grey, and a black.
T'rin drew his hand back quickly as he got nipped again by the black hatchling. "Oh you greedy whelp!" He muttered, giving it more food. The little white was wrapped around his finger, the tip of which was turning purple.
The copper Syphir found its way to Neou, curling up her foot, gnawing impatiently at her boot.

Carefully extracting her boot from the creature's mouth, Neou substituded the tough leather with meat. "I suppose I have no choice, do I? I have Impressed, as of today, a bronze firelizard, a green whersport, a brown whersport, a bronze whersport, and a gold dragon. And I am the Weyrsinger!" Neou threw her hands up in the air, then laughed at herself merrily. "Petty matters indeed. I do not suppose you know much about these creatures? I mean, do I stuff his mouth, and will he Impress me after that? I cannot think that Elenath likes me Impressing so many others, do you love?" I do not mind. They will help keep me warm, and I know that at least the smallest bronze one will help keep my hide clean. Shakespeare gave a small trill in recognition of his feat, then looked to the Syphir. They were strange creatures. Gently prodding one of them with his bronze snout, she looked once to Neou for conformation. "I do not suggest you do that love." The whersports all snorted once, but did not dare prod the strange creatures.

"Well, You're quite the lucky one." T'rin said, wiggling the finger that the white was on. "I haven't a clue even to what they are. But they are interesting!" He stroked the black syphir, which had quite a lump in its tiny thin body. "I suppose you stuff them senseless. Like a firelizard almost."
The copper happily accepted the substitution, licking its maw and creeling for more. It attempted a nibble at Neou's finger.

Rei was wandering through the caves, exploring what there was besides the TTRS headquarters. Keritanth was at her heels, poking her silver head into all manners of things. Then they heard the shouts.
Glad or not, shouts had a tendency to freak Rei. Maybe it was because she was naturally gulli-err...trusting....but she had a funny tendency to get tricked. and yet, she came anyway, and was glad for it.
"what are those things?" She asked, looking at the little creatures peculiarly.

"You should have Impressed a whersport. They are interesting creatures, though not quite to the degree of these little pretties." Neou smiled, then quickly yanked her finger away. Finding more meat from her dwindling supply, she managed to stuff more in the creature's open maw. A copper color he was, and beautiful to look upon. But what to name him? Neou was quite out of names. It had been hard enough to name Shakespeare, somewhat easy to name Dask and Kask, but nearly impossible to fathom a name for Tual. Now what? What names had she left? The names of those who had once lived upon Pern graced her mind, flashing quickly across it until they settled upon one. Mekelroy, or Pinch as he was sometimes known. It fit this strange beast. The copper creeled once, wanting more food to be stuffed down his maw. "Mekelroy. Do you like that name?" Neou waited for an answer, but found the creature had already fallen asleep. Well, it was rather attractive, in a wher sense.

"Why they are... They are... Syphirs! They are Syphirs." T'rin laughed.
Seeing the food in Neou's hands the black slithered to her. The grey swept towards Rei along with the gold, which had freed itself from the tunic. The grey slithered a winding pattern through Rei's feet. The gold however bit her toes.

"you just made that name up, didn't you?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. she looked at the gold syphir and picked it up "if you are poisinous...I am so taking you with me." she said, glaring at the little thing. "could anyone pass me some spare meat? I'm not one to crry around raw food..." she turned and looked at the grey one who was moving around her legs, and picked it up, too. "where do you think you're going? I say we watch these things, just in case they're dangerous...plus, they're kinda cute..."

Neou smiled softly as the black Syphir approached her, then managed to find a sufficent bit of food to offer it. "Both males, are they? I am not entirely sure that anyone knows about them. You are the first!" Tone jubilant, the Harper recalled that perhaps she should be recording these various Hatchings and discoveries for the Weyr. But duties could wait for the day. Surely the Weyrwoman would not push her straight into an awkward spot right after Impressing so many creatures. Surely this writing down of information could wait until the morrow. "What are you going to name that little black who seems rather attached to you? Or is the same creature?" Puzzled, Neou suddenly felt a sinous shape wind itself about her foot. Glancing down, she spotted the syphir, looking perfectly happy to be sleep there. It was a strange creature indeed. Well, Neou was always open to Impressing any sort of creature, be it known upon Pern or not, be it well recorded or not. "I doubt they are dangerous. I like the name if it all the same to you. And I brought meat. It is over there somewhere." Giving a vague gesture, Neou tried to again settle herself upon a rock, suddenly swarmed with various creatures of her own. *Be back later, parents being mean.*

T'rin looked around. "Er... Yeah I did. Oh well." He shrugged his freckled shoulders. He then looked down at his bleeding thumb. "I hope they aren't poisonous. Yes they both seem to be males." He handed Rei some of the meat he hadn't been able to shovel into the hatchling's mouths before they fell asleep. "I doubt they're dangerous. I mean, I'm not dead yet. Or hurt save for a purple finger and a bitten thumb." He gentlely pryed the white from his finger, setting it behind his ear, where it slept on. "Lyf... and..." He coaxed the black from his wrist, draping it over his bare shoulders. "Sai." He grinned, settling back on Naercyth's foot.#nosmileys

"I'm not saying I don't like the name...and we won't know if they're dangerous for a good while...furthermore, whenever I give a reason for anything it's usually just a vague rationalzation of me wanting to get my way without seeming selfish...it's what we all do when we want to give reasons....even if they are good reasons, it;s all the same." She said cooly, looking around in the area Neou had gestured to for the spare meat. "oh! here it is." she got some of the meat and gave it to the two Syphirs that she had in her hands. then, what quiet there was in the cave shattered because of a pair of angry bell-like noises from a nearby cavern. "shards...." she mumbled, recognizing the noises. Taylun and J'tan ran to the caves where T'rim, Neou, and Rei were standing, "What is going on here?" Taylun siad, pouch of meat in her hands and J'tan with his, "Yes what?" He added.

"Syphir Impression." T'rin waved his hands about the cave.
A copper and a tiny white slipped from the knotted tunic, heading toward the newcomers. The copper wound itself around Taylun's ankle, the white stopped halfway to J'tan, breathing heavily, it's tiny body rising and falling with it's pants.
"Help it." T'rin said to J'tan. He pointed warily at the white Syphir.

"Taylun.hey..." Rei smiled and adjusted her syphirs so that she could raise a hand in greeting to her friend and fellow trouble-maker. "and before you ask, yes, he did just make the name up...kinda fits the little things, don't it?"
