Alright,I tried hard to make this critter realistic and Pern-like,I hope it gets through!
Name:Lupine
Description:Lupines seem to be a specie of canine, but more intelligent. Also, adult wild Lupines are extremely shy, which is why they have not been discovered until now. They are quite rare, and are usually found in tropical envirements like Silver Cove Weyr.
Lupines closely resemble wolves. They are a bit larger than a normal canine, and have thick bushy fur. However, their fur acts as a cooler rather than an insulator, thus allowing them to live in warm climates.
Lupines evolved,of course, from canines. Usually, evolvement is a survival of the fittest,in this case it was survival of the most intelligent. When strongly intellignet and empathic canines breeded with others like them, the Lupines eventually came about.
Types:
Similar to dragons, lupines have a color system. However, there are some differences. Instead of ranking, lupine colors are specific to types of lupines, each with their own job in the pack-guardians,warriors,hunters,seers,and diggers(also known as Thread Keepers).
Gray:Lupines with Gray fur are considered the guardians or mothers, and from a dragon perspective could be considered a Queen. The only type that is only female, gray lupines are guardians of the young and the weak in the pack. In the wild, gray lupines care for both her own pups and the pups of others.
Black:Lupines with blakc fur are warriors. In the wild, they fight to defend the pack. If they impress,Blacks make exceptional watchdogs, and are immenssely loyal. However,Blacks can sometimes be agressive or aloof, and are the hardest to impress.
Tawny:These are the master hunters of the Lupines. Tawnys are a light tan color. They are excellent hunters and trackers, and usually supply food for the pack. Tawny lupines are also the easiest to impress, being more friendly than the others.
White-Whites are referred to as "seers". However, they do not actually tell the future. Instead, they seem to have a bit of a sixth sense,a sort of empathy. They are especially good at sensing changes in the weather-especially Threadfall. They can also sense when someone is up to no good.
Brown-Browns are the diggers,or sometimes referred to as Thread keepers. They play a simple yet essential role to the Lupines. Before a Fall, the Brown lupines dig tunnels in the sand, small enough to go unnoticed but large enough for a fully grown lupine to fit into, and deep enough for protection from Thread. These tunnels protect the lupines during a Fall.
Impression:
A while after a Run(see the Breeding section),the female give birth to a litter of 1-8 pups. They are born deaf and blind, but in about 2 weeks they open their eyes and ears and be out and about. Lupines can impress anytime from ages 2 weeks to about one year old. Impression is most likely if humans discover a litter of pups together.
If a lupine finds a human it likes, they will stand before the human and let forth a musical howling. After this display, the Lupine will tell the human its name-a backwards version of the impresse's name.(ex.-Etak for Kate). For male dragonriders, the original name, not the shortened name,is used;and some letters may be added if the lupine's name would be unpronouncable. Impression is one of the few times a Lupine uses mindspeak, they usually use feelings and pictures like firelizards.
Breeding:A Lupine "run",as it is called,is a long event. When a female is in heat(which occurs about once ever 14 months),she wil run across the terrain, creating a difficult path with a scent only male lupines can detect. Later, that males catch the scent she leaves and follow the trail, and the first one to reach the end where the female is waiting wins. Also,Lupines sometimes choose mates ahead of time(usually lifemates),and will allow only the chosen male to join the run.
