Wind whistled past at a tremendous speed, the warm southern sun shown down on rider and dragon, reflecting off the bronze's hide. Rising over Silver Cove, K'roi gave Gareth the signal when they were high enough , and the dragon flashed Between. The chill, airless cold of Between had just enough time to seep into K'roi's bones before they popped out again into a rather more humid atmosphere over a lush and heavily forested area. Even as many times as he'd done it, one could never really get used to traveling into the void of Between.
Ok, back on target. Apparently, a large pack of felines had attacked a settlement on the outskirts of Silver Cove, just far enough away to not have dragons about at all times. Fortunatly, livestock was the only loss, but if the felines were bold enough to do it once, there was a good chance they would do it again, and the holders might not come out so fortunate. The felines had retreated back into the jungle after their raid. K'roi's job, and apparently the job of a few of the other riders though he knew not which ones, was to atleast hunt out the general roaming area of the felines. Then if they could be killed, the riders were to endeavor to do so without putting themselves or their dragons in danger's way. Just incase, K'roi had a saddlepack full of firestone right behind him. If they needed to, he could feed Gareth enough to roast a few felines.

Hurry, Rhysmine, Fennth insisted. Others have already gone between. You wouldn't have us be late, would you? Muttering to herself, Rhys swung herself into Fennth's saddle, and tapped the dragon's neck. Large green wings swung through the air, taking them high above Silver Cove and the weyr. //Now,// Rhys said, and Fennth winked between. In spite of the warnings she herself gave weyrlings, she caught herself counting. One... two...
They reappeared above the jungle-land a bit south of the weyr, high up in the sky. A bit below them flew a massive bronze dragon, almost twice as large as Fennth. Rhys had never envied bronzeriders, preferring Fennth's speed and manuverability to size and strength - and the ability to become Weyrleader. She was happy enough as Weyrling Master. At her signal, the green dragon folded her wings and dove past the larger bronze, then brought them out and soared up to the other rider. "Hail, rider!" Rhys called, voice almost muffled by the humid air. "You here to take care of those felines, too?"

"Yes, and glad to see a fellow rider here!" K'roi shouted back with a nod that might or might not have been visible what with the movement accompanying flight. "Have you been informed of the situation?" He then asked in a half shout, emerald and aquamarine eyes shielded with a hand as he glanced at the Green rider. ~Ware K'roimine...I scent felines.~ Gareth's thoughts wove through his rider's mind, accompanied by various swirls of red and yellow. Almost without thinking, he gave the hand signal used during fighting thread that meant 'avoidance, swoop lower'. It was easier to read the signals than to shout over the wind and humidity anyway, but a year as a wingleader already had him set in their ways.

Fighting Thread had certainly left its mark in Rhys's quick reaction time. Barely a moment after the signal left the bronzerider's hand, she and Fennth were almost skimming along the forest, before she realized that there was no Threadfall, here. What was that for? she thought irritably, ready to signal Fennth to move upwards. Felines, the green said smugly. It's a wonder even you can't smell them, Rhysmine. //Be quiet,// the rider replied, then looked up at the bronzerider as Fennth gained altitude. "I think we've found a pack!" she yelled over to him.

"Yeah...from what Gareth says, its a big one too...no wonder they got so many wherries and runner beasts." He shouted by way of reply. His mismatched eyes scanned the ground for an opening of any kind. Unfortunatly, this was the jungle. The only opening there was likely to be would be one that was made. Since they didn't currently have the power to do such, K'roi followed the felines from Gareth's point of view, and from within his mind. The bronze couldn't truely see the beasts, but he could smell them plenty well, and they were on the move. ~They're heading for the sea.~ The bronze sent, pinions moving to a beat that kept him aloft and moving at a rapid pace. "At the speed they're going, they're going to reach the area of the first attack before we could get reinforcements in there!" the bronzerider shouted to the greenrider.

"Shards," Rhys swore under her breath. For once, Fennth had no smart comment to add. I could beat them there, she said suddenly. Greens can fly fast enough. If you give me firestone, I can hold them until the bronze comes. //No,// Rhys said, half to herself. //We'll have to go between.// But she didn't really want to. No sane person enjoyed going between. I can, Fennth insisted. That's why we're such a good Thread-fighting team. Rhys hesitated, then drew a deep breath. "Fennth says she can get there fast enough to hold them off until you get there," she called over. Tell him that no feline pack is too large for us, the green declared proudly, but Rhys just waited for the bronzerider's answer, half-praying that he would say 'no'. There was that bag of firestone resting behind her, but it had only been in halfhearted preparation, in case of an emergency. It is an emergency, Rhysmine! Fennth said. Rhys could feel her dragon's wings straining to keep a steady beat that wouldn't outpace the larger bronze. Fennth wanted to fly ahead and help, badly.

~She is right, you know K'roimine. Fennth would be able to reach the end of the jungle before us.~ Gareth's sensible voice came to his rider. K'roi was hesitant to risk the pair, but as some old holder had said, desperate times call for desperate measures. Plus he had spied the bag of firestone the greenrider had thoughtfully brought along, much like himself. Surely there was no feline pack strong enough to outlast a fully flaming dragon swooping in over their furred heads. And if there was, it was doubtful that they would have any chance of advancing while she held them at bay. Gareth and himself could get there, and two living flamethrowers should be enough to turn any pack of felines, no matter how bold they were. "All right. You two go ahead and hold them, but I don't want you doing anything that would take you within their jumping distance." K'roi finally shouted by way of his answer.

Fennth's thoughts twined with Rhys's in a feeling of exultation, causing the greenrider to grin recklessly. "Of course," she said, the natural thrill of adrenaline rushing through her. We'll be good, Fennth promised, her green head snaking back to take the firestone that was suddenly in Rhys's small palms. The rhythm of her wingbeats began to quicken, and the wind began to howl in Rhys's ears, tugging at her blonde curls and brilliant scarlet coat. It was all too soon at Fennth began to slow, and Rhys's eyes adjusted to the fact that things weren't moving as fast as they were. We're above the pack, Fennth said, drawing Rhys in so the rider could peer through the dragon's eyes. Indeed, there was a pack of loping felines making its way through the jungle. //Go faster,// Rhys said urgently. //We must get there before them.// Fennth laughed and spiraled upwards, chewing firestone almost leisurely. At the top of her arc, she abruptly folded her wings and dove downwards, straight towards the pack. At the last moment, the green's mouth opened and a stream of fire aimed straight towards the felines, who yelped and attempted to leap at the dragon and snare one of her wings. Fennth easily soared out of their reach, laughing. Rhys was laughing, as well. You see, Rhysmine? Fennth asked, in an I-told-you-so manner. Just a few more times, and the bronzerider will come, and we'll be done. Rhys's hair was a terrible mess. //Show-off,// she said lovingly, as the green dragon turned around for another steep dive to breath fire at the felines, forcing them back towards the jungle. But she had to admit: it was terribly exhilarating to be in dragonflight, with Fennth breathing fire against the pack of felines.

K'roi watched as the greenrider sped off ahead of him and Gareth, worry clouding his mind. ~They will be fine.~ The great Bronze sent, increasing his pace to catch up as quickly as possible. Wings beating the air, the wind whistled around them, and Gareth abruptly reached his head back to accept the firestone K'roi had been digging out of the pack he carried. Sharp teeth grinding the stone in no different a manner than if he were crunching wherri bones, the bronze had a gullet full by the time they could see the greenrider again ahead of them. She was flamming downwards, sweeping low to catch the pack before they got any farther. Letting loose a terrible cry, the bronze gained the scene, and opened his maw to release a jet of flame down onto the already retreating pack of felines. They seemed to be just about ready to flee altogether, when the whole pack abruptly split into two, each smaller group going in different directions in order to circle around. Apparently, there was something else driving these felines. There was a good chance that it was hunger, as animals that had feasted on easy prey were likely to return at any cost.

Fennth paused for a moment, watching the flaming bulk of the bronze soaring downwards at the felines. The pack suddenly split in two, and before Rhys could warn her green, Fennth had changed direction to dive down at one of the groups, sharing her elation in a shrill cry. Rhys added her voice to the green's as they both dove straight down, Fennth releasing a stream of fire at the felines, who yowled in pain and probable terror. //They must be starving, to stay so long under dragonfire,// she sent to Fennth. The green seemed to agree as she swooped upwards once more to turn back around and proceeded to flame the felines into next year. Rhys spared a glance to see how the bronzerider was doing, when Fennth suddenly dipped to the side, almost throwing her. My wing, Rhysmine, Fennth cried, her mindvioce colored with pain. Her flight began to waver as the dragon attempted to climb higher.A feline jumped for it... "Shards," Rhys swore, sending comfort towards her dragon. Fennth was obviously badly hurt, if she couldn't keep her flight pattern straight. She signalled towards the bronzerider. 'Dragon hurt. Land in safe spot.'

The bronzerider swore as he saw the greenrider's signal. Where would she land? If the Green was too badly hurt, then she would not be able to make any great distance before settling down, and the felines would be upon them with one injured dragon. The firestone was about half gone now, and K'roi staved off from feeding Gareth more just yet. They were going to need it. "Tell Fennth to try and land in as open a spot as she can find if she can't make it far enough away. The felines won't be able to get on top of us as easily there." Gareth gave an affirmative, and sent his rider's directions to the green, moving in close to follow as guard on her wing should she falter.
