Okay, I know this really isn't likely to get accepted, but what the heck. They were fun to make up.
Talker-birds are pretty much just that, although they speak telepatically, like dragons. They look like hawks, and when they are nestlings, they can fit in the palm of a full-grown man's hand. When they are full-grown, they range in size from a four-foot wingspan to a two-foot wingspan. Talker-birds' feathers are always the same shade of their color. They are extremely social (they enjoy the company of other pets), but will fight for their bonded if needed to. They may die when their bonded dies, or simply bond to another, older person, usually one who has lost a Talker-bird.
Colors - They are the original colors of dragons, plus silvers. All colors are equivalent to their dragon counterpart.
Gold - the largest Talker-birds, and are always female. They lay about ten eggs per clutch. They are only Impressed by females.
Silver - the second-largest, about the same size as bronzes. They are always female, and they only bond females. A silver will lay about eight eggs per clutch.
Bronze - the same size as silvers. They are male, and always bond males. They fly golds, and only smaller bronzes will fly silvers.
Brown - smaller than bronzes and silvers. They are always male, and always bond males. They can attempt to fly a gold, but usally fly silvers.
Blue - second-to-smallest. They are male, but will bond either gender. They only fly greens.
Green - smallest of all Talker-birds. They are female, but will bond either gener. They lay about five eggs per clutch, but are usually sterile.
Communication - Vocally, they communicate with cries like a normal hawks, but they are extremely intelligent, and telepathically speak to their bonded with words.
Mating - The bronze who most recently flew the largest gold sweeps over the territory of the Talkers (usually a weyr) and all the Talker-birds immediately leave what they were doing to follow him. Nothing is known about what happens while they are away, since they are secretive about that, but the humans bonded usually experience some unusual 'cravings' during flight.
Impression - This is like a dragon Impression. Humans who wish to Impress Talker-birds gather around the clutch (always wearing heavy wherhide gloves, since Talkers' claws are sharp from birth) and wait for them to hatch. If they sense their bonded's presence, the bird will fly to the outstretched hand, and the Impression is complete. One person can Impress two Talker-birds, and they are usually siblings. If a person Impresses two Talkers, the talkers s/he owns will not mate, so they cannot breed a clutch of their own.
